Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy, a Democrat, slammed Louisiana GOP Gov. Bobby Jindal on Tuesday, saying statements he made after a meeting Monday between governors and President Barack Obama were "ridiculous."
"To equate talking about the minimum wage with the white flag, and somehow we are becoming a minimum wage society is ultimately ridiculous," Malloy told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Tuesday. "It is baseless."
After the White House meeting, Jindal launched an attack against President Obama's drive to raise the minimum wage and said the "Obama economy is now the minimum wage economy." He said the president was "waving a white flag" with his push to raise the minimum wage rather than focus on growing the economy.
Malloy immediately rebutted Jindal, calling his comment "the most insane statement I've ever heard."
On Tuesday, Malloy said Jindal should be "embracing raising the minimum wage," since he said Louisiana had the "third-largest poverty rate in the nation."
Raising the minimum wage was a "nonargument," Malloy said, adding that it is an important step to "move this country forward."
"Let's have wages that allow people to get out of poverty, live a decent life, be good, strong Americans, raise good, strong, American families. That's what we should be talking about. Not the white flag of something or other," Malloy said.
