Republican Gov. Chris Christie's job approval rating has plummeted over the last year, as the bridge-gate scandal takes its toll on the governor's popularity, a new poll finds.

A year ago, Christie had a 70 percent approval rating among New Jersey residents. That number has now dropped to 50 percent, according to the Monmouth University/Asbury Park Press Poll taken Feb. 19-23 of 803 New Jersey adults.

The poll has a 3.5 percent margin of error.

The New Jersey Republican's job rating has dropped nine points since January. The poll was conducted days after emails of Christie's staffers were released, revealing their involvement in the closing of commuter lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge, which caused a massive traffic jam in Fort Lee, N.J. His approval rating has dropped 15 points since the scandal broke.

Among registered voters in New Jersey, Christie's job numbers have fallen to 49 percent, which is the first time since 2011 that his job rating has gone below 50 percent.

Now, just 40 percent of Garden State residents say they would give Christie an A or B grade on his handling of the Superstorm Sandy aftermath. That rating was over 70 percent  five months ago.

In January, Hoboken, N.J., Mayor Dawn Zimmer claimed Christie's administration withheld hurricane relief money from her city because she would not approve a building project that he supported.

"This hole is getting deeper," said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute. "Christie's image as hero of Sandy is now just a fading memory."

Ninety-two percent of New Jersey residents say they have followed the Bridge-gate scandal, and 61 percent now say that they don't think Christie is being completely honest about his knowledge of the scandal.

However, Garden State residents are also skeptical of the special committee that is investigating the scandal, with 56 percent saying they believe it is more interested in going after the governor compared to 32 percent who said it is more concerned about learning the facts of the case.
