New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie insisted that it’s “absolutely not” too late for GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney to jump start his struggling campaign.

“You saw the change in those polls happen very quickly and I’m here to tell you this morning it can happen very quickly back the other way,” Christie said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

The popular governor was making the rounds on the Sunday political programs to recharge the Romney/Ryan ticket after a series of recent polls show a steady lead for President Obama in the key battleground states.

Christie, who delivered the keynote address at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, believes that Wednesday’s upcoming debate will also bring a new opportunity for the GOP.

“I think the beginning of that is Wednesday night when Gov. Romney for the first time gets on the same stage with the President of the United States and people can make a direct comparison about them and their visions for the future night and Wednesday night’s the restart of this campaign,” he told host David Gregory.

If the election were held today, an Associated Press analysis shows Obama would win at least 271 electoral votes, with likely victories in crucial Ohio and Iowa along with 19 other states and the District of Columbia. Romney would win 23 states for a total of 206.

“I think you’re going to see those numbers start to move right back in the other direction,” Christie added.

But Gregory pressed: “Why isn’t it too late to believe that the presidential debates — after you have your own convention, including keynoter Chris Christie — that you can restart with the presidential debates?”

Christie replied that many Americans still have not dialed into the campaign.

“You’re going to have tens of millions of people for the very first time David really tuning in and paying attention to this race,” he said. “And also for the first time you’re going to have them be able to make a direct side-by-side comparison.”

Christie said Democratic cries about the lack of detail in Romney’s budget plan are hypocritical because Obama’s budget is similarly flawed.

“I wish you guys were just as tough on the president,” he said. “Let’s be fair here. Governor Romney has laid out a direction and a vision for the direction of this country. He’s not an accountant. Let’s hold the president to the same standard and criticize him, as well.”

Christie, who said he talked to Romney following the leak of the campaign video in Boca Raton, Fla., in which Romney said 47 percent of U.S. voters never will support him, defended the candidate and said the recorded comments were “inartfully put.”

“He [Romney] believes that every American should have the opportunity for greatness,” Christie said. “He believes that every American should be part of a shared sacrifice to fix the problems that are besieging our country right now.

“The president’s just trying to run out the clock,” he continued. “He desperately wants to run out the clock with platitudes, which sound nice.”

At the end of the day, campaigns are about the candidates, according to Christie.

“And they’re going to be able to see these two candidates next to each other, debating each other,” he said. “And Gov. Romney I know is going to do a great job on Wednesday night laying out his vision for America’s future and making the contrast between he and the president of the United States.”
