New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's treatment of former aide Bridget Anne Kelly is "shameful" and will hurt the potential GOP presidential candidate, talk show host Joe Scarborough predicted.

"The shameful treating of this woman in this document, and by the office, is going to come back and haunt him," Scarborough said on his MSNBC "Morning Joe" program Monday.

Story continues below videos.

A state-commissioned report about the bridge-gate scandal was released last week and cleared the Republican governor of wrongdoing. It said Kelly, his former deputy chief of staff, orchestrated last fall's lane closings of lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge.

In the report, Kelly was portrayed as a woman spurned by Christie campaign manager Bill Stepien. Christie fired Kelly for her role in the lane closings that rocked the reputation of the former GOP presidential front-runner.

"At the center of that staff that you're talking about is a woman that now Chris Christie's people would have us believe was an emotional wreck, a love-sick wreck," said Scarborough, the former Republican Florida congressman.

The host called the report "one of the most gratuitous sideswipes of somebody I've ever seen." He questioned why Kelly was hired for such a key position on Christie's staff if she was prone to such emotional behavior.

"If she was really that much of a wreck and tears in her face and lovesick and all the other things that they are claiming now that Bridget Kelly was, why was she running New Jersey?" he asked.

Scarborough said attacking Kelly this way could open the door for her to "go out and double down and defend her reputation and tell everything that she knows."
