President George W. Bush gave a four-word endorsement to Mitt Romney on Tuesday — as he disappeared inside an elevator.

The 43rd commander-in-chief was followed by an ABC News team after giving a speech on human rights in Washington.

And as he entered the elevator he gave the news organization the words it wanted to hear. “I’m for Mitt Romney,” he said as the doors closed behind him.

As ABC pointed out, the announcement was hardly a surprise, but it is the first time that Bush has made any public statement about the 2012 presidential race. His parents, former first couple George H.W. and Barbara Bush and his brother, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush all formally endorsed Romney in March.

But Bush’s brief statement is unlikely to mean he will become involved in Romney’s campaign, ABC reported. “Even in his post-presidential life, Bush still gets a lot of the blame for the poor economy, according to polls, though he has become more popular since leaving office.”
