Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell defended vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan and said recent remarks by Democrats about the congressman’s Medicare and budget plans are “incendiary” and “way over the top.”

“I think Paul Ryan’s a serious candidate with real solutions,” McDonnell said Sunday on “Meet the Press.” “Now we need real answers about how to get America out of debt and back to work, and Paul Ryan’s got some good ideas on how to do it.”

He said President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are attacking the Republican Party because they can’t run a campaign on the issues.

“These character attacks by the other side are just horrific, but I understand it because if you got a record where you got $16 trillion in debt and no energy plan and a jobless rate of 42 months over 8 percent, of course you can’t run a campaign on the issues, and you’re going to have to resort to that,” McDonnell said.

On the topic of Romney’s tax returns, McDonnell said the Republican nominee has nothing to prove.

“This issue’s not about Mitt Romney’s tax returns,” he said. “That’s not what Americans care about. They care about their own tax returns and the whopping increases in taxes and regulation that this administration has put on the American people and what they’re going to put on.

“This is not what the American people care about,” McDonnell continued. “This is below their dignity. This is about how do we get the greatest country on earth out of debt and back to work, and Obama’s just flat failed. Nice guy, bad policies. Hasn’t got the job done. It’s time for a change.”
