Rep. Farenthold: Benghazi May End Media 'Love Affair' With Obama

Thursday, 01 May 2014 07:39 PM

The media's "love affair" with President Barack Obama may finally be over with the revelation that U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice was coached to parrot to the press a phony explanation for the Benghazi attack, Rep. Blake Farenthold says.

"I have a problem with the media and the pass that they've given the Obama administration but at some point they have to do their jobs and report," the Texas Republican told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"I guarantee you that reporters don't like being lied to or misled any more than you or I do. I thought the Obama love affair with the media was going to end when they started [surveillance of] journalists — but maybe this will be it."

According to an email obtained by the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch, National Security Council communications adviser Ben Rhodes and public relations specialists coached Rice to say the attack stemmed from protests over an anti-Islamic video "and not a broader failure of policy."

That explanation turned out to be false as it emerged that the attack that killed four Americans including Ambassador Chris Stevens had been planned by terrorists.

Story continues below video.

On Wednesday, White House spokesman Jay Carney insisted the email was "not about Benghazi."

"It’s nothing but spin. You go back to 'if you like your insurance you can keep it,"' Farenthold said, referring to Obama's promise that under the Affordable Care Act, Americans could keep the health insurance policies they already had.

"I don't think the truth necessarily gets in their way over there on Pennsylvania Avenue."

Farenthold said he was struck by Thursday's testimony by retired Brig. Gen. Robert Lovell to the House Oversight Committee.

"Here was a man who is on the frontlines who felt compelled to come forward to Congress because he was so disappointed in the way his government, our government, handled the situation," Farenthold said.

"It's absolutely shameful. We've investigated embassy security …The keys to it are the ability of the host country to provide security and the willingness of the host country to provide security.

"When you've got a country in transition like Libya was at the time, they do not have the ability nor the will to provide embassy security. We should have stepped up the game and they were pleading for help in Benghazi and for political considerations, the answer was no."

Farenthold explained his theory behind the alleged cover-up of the attack, which occurred on Sept 11th, 2012.

"We were coming up to a presidential election and one of the themes was that we've got bin-Laden, al-Qaida is on the run," he said.

"A terrorist attack that resulted in the deaths of Americans, which is what happened in Benghazi, would not have been good for the president's re-election game.

"There's your motive and now we're starting to find the evidence with these e-mails."
