How bad was the air pollution in Beijing over the weekend?
New York City’s Air Quality Index on Sunday was 13 on a scale that usually runs from 0 to 500. The worst pollution in the United States was in Tacoma, Wash., on Sunday, which registered a 91. At 151, the pollution is considered “unhealthy”; at 200, “very unhealthy”; and at 300, “hazardous.”
The pollution in Beijing on Saturday night was an unthinkable 755 — the highest anyone remembers in the Chinese capital city, the Wall Street Journal
The chief culprit was a weather pattern that trapped pollution from cars, factories and power plants over the city during the weekend, and record-low temperatures led to an increase in the burning of coal.
China’s government is under pressure to deal with the nation’s environmental problems after more than three decades of virtually unrestricted economic growth.
Footnote: Beijing didn’t even make it into the top 10 Chinese cities with the highest pollution levels.
