Allen West: Obama Just a 'Bystander' on Inner-City Problems

By Greg Richter   |   Tuesday, 04 Feb 2014 08:51 PM

Former U.S. Rep. Allen West says President Barack Obama is doing nothing to help inner-city blacks, whom he described as being on "an economic dependency plantation."

Obama told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly on Sunday that he has made multiple speeches urging black men to be more responsible for the children they father, but they don't get publicity.

West, who appeared Tuesday on Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren," agreed that broken families are part of the problem. Other issues contributing to black poverty include lack of education and a teenage unemployment rate of almost 40 percent, he said.

"It's an economic dependency plantation which is being created in the inner cities," West said. "I see it when I go back to my old neighborhood in the inner city of Atlanta, Ga. The neighborhood that used to be on Auburn Avenue, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is buried, Ebenezer Baptist Church, is not the same street, not the same Auburn Avenue that I grew up with."

Obama can't solve all the problems of the black community, West noted, but he said that as a role model in the nation's highest office, "he's a start point."

West said Obama instead appears to be just "a bystander to everything."

"This is his economy. These are his policies," West said.
