Newt Gingrich had a friendly conversation Wednesday with presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney after news broke that he was shutting down his floundering campaign, reports The National Memo.

Gingrich, who has shared a somewhat tumultuous relationship with the former Massachusetts governor, looks to be setting the stage for an endorsement of his former challenger.

“It’s clear Romney is the nominee and the focus should be on defeating Obama. We should not focus on defeating ourselves,” Gingrich told supporters in Kings Mountain, N.C., after Romney swept the primary contests in five states the night before.

Gingrich has started planning an event where he will formally support Romney, Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond said. According to Hammond, the one-time rivals agreed to unite against President Barack Obama in hopes of electing a conservative to the White House in 2012.

“You have to at some point be honest about what’s happening in the real world as opposed to what you would like to have happened,” Gingrich conceded.
