The United States waited too long to cut off aid to Egypt, and now it’s too late to stop, former Assistant U.S. Secretary of State Richard Grenell says.

"The time would have been when [President Mohammed] Morsi and the Islamists took over," Grenell told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"That would have been the time to absolutely stop the aid and say, look, the U.S. taxpayer is not going to fund a government where the Islamists are in charge."

Story continues below.

Federal law prohibits the U.S. from giving aid to countries where a coup has taken place — but the Obama administration declined to declare the ouster of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood a coup.

"[The] simple fact is there was a coup … [but] I would not want to cut off the aid now simply because now is not the time. The time would have been when Morsi and the Islamists took over," Grenell said.

"That would have been the time to absolutely stop the aid and say, look, the U.S. taxpayer is not going to fund a government where the Islamists are in charge. That would have been a fantastic time for the president … to show some leadership.

"The problem that we have is that President [Barack] Obama has no credibility. We didn't try to stop it when the Islamists were in charge. He didn't call it a coup. It's like his head is in the sand."

Grenell, also a Fox News contributor, accused Obama of approaching diplomacy from the position of being "the law-school professor, left wing of the Democratic Party."

"What you have is a whole bunch of people that are living in classrooms and esoteric conversations where on paper it sounds good to say, can't we all just hug it out and get along?" he explained.

"The problem . . . is that when you enter the Oval Office and you start getting top secret security briefings on who wants to bring down the U.S. . . . What happened is when he got into office he suddenly found that his left-wing law school professorial ideas were completely impractical."
