Is President Barack Obama's gossamer cloak of golden media-spun Teflon already wearing thin and becoming transparent?

During the president's speech Tuesday night before a joint session of Congress, his ideology and internal contradictions seemed threadbare. And because his oratorical techniques no longer surprise or dazzle, his words no longer are a fig leaf able to conceal his aspirations.

Consider a few snapshots from the speech. Early on, Obama proclaimed that he doesn’t believe in bigger government, but the remainder of his speech was a 50-minute Christmas list of new and expanded government programs that he promises Uncle Santa will bring.

Snatching a page from President Ronald Reagan's speeches, Obama introduced heroes in the audience, the last of whom was “Ty'Sheoma Bethea, the young girl from that school I visited in Dillon, South Carolina, a place where the ceilings leak, the paint peels off the walls, and they have to stop teaching six times a day because the train barrels by their classroom.”

One day after class, Obama continued, “she went to the public library and typed up a letter to the people sitting in this chamber. She even asked her principal for the money to buy a stamp.

“The letter asks us for help and says, 'We are just students trying to become lawyers, doctors, congressmen like yourself, and one day President, so we can make a change to not just the state of South Carolina, but also the world. We are not quitters.'

“That's what she said: 'We are not quitters,'” Obama said. “These words and these stories tell us something about the spirit of the people who sent us here. They tell us that . . . there is . . . a willingness to take responsibility for our future and our posterity.”

Huh? Let's get real. This young woman, lionized Tuesday night on worldwide television, did only one thing: She wrote a letter asking national lawmakers to give her and her school goodies paid for by others.

“We are not quitters,” she wrote.

True, but what she has not quit is mooching.

Once upon a time, self-reliant Americans would have patched the school roof and painted its peeling walls themselves.

All this young woman did was ask politicians hundreds of miles away to tax money from others at gunpoint to benefit her.

For this, Obama held her up as a heroine to be emulated, as an example to other children of what merits praise, fame and reward in his radical community organizer ideology.

Such people's votes give Democrats one-party rule in Chicago. Voters are hooked on government dependency. They look to politicians and ward heelers to take money from others and transfer it to them in jobs, cash and other benefits.

And Obama clearly wants to create nationwide the kind of paternalistic, neo-feudal, one-party political machine that he served, and that empowered him, in Chicago.

Where does such government lead? A witty parody of the Creators Syndicate cartoon Wizard of Id was bouncing around the Internet this week. Its frames showed Barack Obama on a balcony giving a speech to a cheering crowd.

“I promise you free healthcare!” said this cartoon's Obama. “Free Housing! Free clothing! . . . Food Stamps! . . . And jobs for EVERYBODY. . . . Any Questions?”

In the final frame, Obama takes a question from a puzzled member of the crowd: “What do we need jobs for?”

Bingo!

The morning after Obama spoke, educated Americans marked the grim anniversary of Feb. 25, 1913, the day of infamy that the 16th Amendment and income tax enslaved us.

The income tax was sold politically as a levy that would tax only the rich. When one lawmaker proposed limiting it to 3 percent, he was laughed down with the statement that, “if we did that, some darned fool would try to raise it that high.”

Obama was peddling this same class-envy, soak-the-rich fool's gold Tuesday night, promising that, under his plan “95 percent of working households in America will receive a tax cut, a tax cut that you will see in your paychecks beginning on April 1,” i.e. April Fools’ Day. Any such cut will be tiny and subject to recapture by tax collectors.

His trillions of dollars of promised goodies will be paid for only with heavier taxes on those earning $250,000 a year or more, and on corporations.

People educated in government schools as bad as Ty'Sheoma Bethea's are never taught that these entities Obama is targeting provide your jobs and pass on their taxes invisibly to you through higher prices — so that YOU will pay their higher taxes.

And the half of Americans who pay no income taxes dimwittedly believe that government is just a giant machine giving them goodies for free, so long as they keep voting for Democrats like President Obama.

Two sardonic speech moments:

Obama promised military people more pay and benefits and pledged: “You have our support.” But his administration this week acknowledged that the one part of the $3.66 trillion federal budget where he plans massive cuts is in defense and intelligence spending, just as President Bill Clinton did, leaving us vulnerable to 9/11-like terrorist attacks.

Our plaque on the Moon reading “We came in peace for all Mankind” is psychological evidence that those who wrote it are a warlike species. In the same way, it reveals volumes that Democrats feel a need to say they support America's defenders.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi kept leaping to her feet, applauding wildly like a manic, pop-eyed Chihuahua at each promise to enlarge government. But then Obama threw a sop to parents by recommending “reform . . . new incentives for teacher performance . . . and rewards for success.”

Suddenly Pelosi was stone silent, sitting on her hands, as she and fellow liberals avoided any gesture that might annoy the powerful and wealthy teacher unions.

The next day, Democrats terminated with extreme prejudice the last vestiges of parent school vouchers in Washington, D.C.
