U.S. voters need to fight the attempt of President Barack Obama and other Democrats to wield immigration reform as a tool to socialize the United States.
U.S. Rep. Solomon P. Ortiz, D-Texas, unveiled the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity Act of 2009 on Dec. 15, declaring, “This is about ending illegal immigration.”
Joining him were Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez, D-Ill., and members of the Congressional Black Caucus, the Progressive Caucus, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. The proposed legislation is the linchpin of President Obama’s strategy to end illegal immigration by proclaiming all immigrants legal — a strategy that some academics hail as a fine piece of political sophistry.
In the Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has asked Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., to push the Obama-endorsed comprehensive immigration bill. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., appears to be teamed with Schumer to lead the Senate efforts in what promises to be another McCain-Kennedy bipartisan fiasco that U.S. citizen-voters thwarted in 2007.
Just as Obamacare became the congressional cause célèbre of 2009, despite wide public opposition look for Obamigration to be intertwined with jobs, jobs, jobs legislation on Capitol Hill.
In the House, the 700-page immigration reform proposal, which is 2,000 pages shorter than the Obamacare bills, would be equally destructive to the nation. The immigration bill is a far more liberal version of the 2007 McCain-Kennedy comprehensive immigration bill that voters' vocal opposition defeated, despite bipartisan support in the House, the Senate, and the Bush White House.
Since 2007, the estimated number of aliens living illegally in the United States has continued to rise, with current guesstimates of 17 million to 36 million men, women, and children. Leftists and immigrant advocates tend to low-ball the number of illegal aliens, mindful that 70 percent of U.S. citizens oppose illegal immigration.
The immigration bill contains a “pathway to citizenship” that would be easier and cheaper for illegal aliens than the 2007 failed legislation was. Under the bill, “undocumented immigrants” need be in the country only before Dec. 15, 2009 –– in contrast to previous bills that required illegal alien applicants to be here for three to four years before applying for citizenship.
The bill would reintroduce elements of the failed 2007 Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act. Then-Sen. Obama voted for that act, which proposed granting green cards for high school and college students who were brought to the United States as minors by their illegal-alien parents. In addition, this new bill would widen the visa program to promote reunification of families, where by an immigrant who enters the United States illegally could bring in members of his/her extended family, including elderly grandparents.
The present immigration reform bill would establish a commission to recommend changes loosening visas for skilled workers (H-1B and H-2B categories). The bill would weaken enforcement of U.S. immigration laws by repealing a section of the 1995 Immigration and Naturalization Act that created the 287(g) program that enlisted local police and sheriffs to enforce federal immigration laws. It also would “increase oversight” of border patrol agents to “protect” the “civil liberties” of those caught illegally entering the country or those caught residing in the country. Such changes would transform the United States as it now exists.
At the congressional unveiling of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity Act of 2009, immigrant advocates chanted, "Sí, se puede" (Yes, we can) in a carryover from the 2008 campaign, in which Obama received 75 percent of the Hispanic vote. Little children wore shirts that read, “Future Voter,” but there were no cheers for the United States, no singing of God Bless America, no tribute to America the land of the free and the home of the brave. Instead measures to tie the hands of U.S. border patrols were hailed as meaningful “change.”
To the contrary notwithstanding, a linkage exists between Obamacare and Obamigration. For example, any mention of health care for illegal aliens has been quashed by liberal Democrats and news media. Denied was the charge that Obamacare would provide coverage for illegal aliens. The fix was in –– close on the heels of the Obama health care bill would come a bill to end illegal immigration.
The day after the new immigration reform bill, the U.S. Census Bureau released new projections for demographic and population estimates through 2050. The bureau estimates “high” immigration based on flexible government policies, especially if the bill passes.
The Hispanic minority would form about 28 percent of the U.S. population; the black population will remain static at about 12.2 percent; the Asian population will rise to about 6 percent; and the white population is projected to be 49.9 percent. The 3.9 percent unaccounted for in the Bureau’s numbers may be “others” or governmental mathematical slippage.
The questions that illegal immigrant zealots and advocates never answer are, “How many times do U.S. citizens and taxpayers have to say, NO? Do Democrats really hate America enough to make it a Third World nation? Why must the Democrats parade out yet another 'comprehensive' immigration reform bill?”
In the Democrats' push for open borders, egged on by the president, appear to be taking a note from 19th-century railroad mogul William Vanderbilt, who replied to a press inquiry about the public uproar over his policies, replied, “The public be damned.”
In the New Year, the public should call for the defeat of this immigration proposal and any other Obamigration bill. With 2010 an election year, a vocal electorate can derail House and Senate versions of the bill. The efforts of Obama and the Democrats to change the United States into a socialist nation by immigration fiat must not succeed for a variety of reasons, including cultural, fiscal, educational cost, environmental damage, welfare cost, and national sovereignty perspectives.
