On October 15, at the height of the fiscal chaos and legislative nightmare, President Barack Obama was interviewed on the Spanish-language television network Univision. During the time of the government shutdown crisis, he was stating that immigration is a top priority.

As far as he was concerned, the fiscal dust-up was settled, and so it was. The next day, on October 16, the U.S. Senate passed a stopgap fiscal bill, as did the U.S. House of Representatives an hour or so before the alleged “witching hour” of a fiscal “default” of the United States of America. On the very next day, the president continued his push for immigration reform.

President Obama won the October fiscal showdown because of fractures among Senate Republicans as well as among the Republican majority in the House of Representatives. Support for the president’s unyielding position was hailed by liberal news commentators and entertainment types. The actor Robert Redford, for instance, declared that “racism” was involved in the shutdown against Obama. Increasingly, criticism of Obama policies is said to reflect “racism.”

With the nation’s fiscal solvency still unresolved, the October votes merely “kicked the fiscal can down the road” and for only a few months! Look for fiscal solvency to continue consuming energy in the Senate and the House. Working on the Democrat supposition that “No crisis should be wasted,” Obama may seize this opportunity to advance immigration.

For instance, on October 7, during the government shutdown, part of the Mall in Washington, D.C., was reopened by the National Park Service for an immigration-rights rally. For this “Rally and March for Immigrant Dignity and Respect,” the NPS (funded by the taxpayers) provided stands, microphones, portable toilets, and clean-up. The chant of “Si, se puede” (Yes, we can) was the message of the day.

In contrast, when World War II veterans, many in wheelchairs, arrived for a long-planned event at their Memorial on the Mall, barricades blocked the way. “Old Soldiers” and their buddies pushing their wheelchairs proceeded to dismantle the barricades and hold their event. On October 17, with the government shutdown resolved, The Washington Postpublished aphotograph with the caption, “Barricades being removed from WWII memorial” — too little, too late.

President Obama’s control of the federal government is unyielding. The National Park Service said the immigration rally, held during the shutdown, was a First Amendment matter. Free speech for illegal aliens but not for U.S. war veterans? The NPS Director had incoherent answers for congressmen during a hearing on the matter. He admitted calling the White House but could not remember to whom he spoke.

With Obama control unchallenged, America’s leftist academia, entertainment, news media, politicians, and moneyed elitists seek to push through their long-awaited “comprehensive” citizenship giveaway.

It’s been five months since the Democrat-controlled U.S. Senate passed the flawed “comprehensive” immigration bill, entitled the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013. The Senate then sent their legislation to the House of Representatives. Curiously, among the most vocal critics of the Senate bill are U.S. Department of Homeland Security employees who deal with immigration on a daily basis. Their concerns fall on deaf Democrat ears, but their names are noted.

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives is still considering the Senate immigration bill. Indications are that the Republican majority, wisely, will pass incremental (short) immigration bills — separate bills for border control, for visas, for deportation, etc. Short, clearly written bills, each addressing one aspect of immigration, can avoid the train wreck ahead with the “comprehensive” (massive) Obamacare legislation.

A poll released on October 15 was funded by NBC and Esquire magazine and conducted by Benenson Strategy Group (an Obama campaign unit) and Public Opinion Strategies (a vaguely Republican organization). Their poll showed 54 percent of “middle-bloc” respondents opposed Obamacare — 38 percent strongly and 16 percent somewhat strongly. Another 32 percent favored Obamacare, 12 percent strongly and 20 percent somewhat.

Republicans have taken a beating over the debt ceiling and budget shutdown. Add to this their dismay over Hispanic voting trends and the Grand Old Party (GOP) may offer little resistance to the Obama/Democrat legislative juggernaut.

On October 11 in Tucson, Ariz., the National Day Laborers Organizing Network (NDLON) tried to stop deportations of illegal aliens by chaining themselves to government vehicles. NDLON, founded in 2001 in Northridge, Calif., is funded mainly by George Soros Open Society groups. Similar demonstrations are financed by other billionaire leftists. The press fails to ask how these demonstrators paid their way to Tucson or paid for food and lodging.

The fiscal showdown showed that the president and Senate Democrats will not negotiate, not on the budget and not on immigration. They have won the day with an apathetic citizenry that is either disinterested or applauding more entitlements.
