Instead of quitting while they were ahead, the Republicans plunged into whining and complaining, bouncing around demands, including control of questions asked at debates. It allowed the liberal media to turn the tables and play defenders of journalistic independence against GOP bullies.

House Republicans don't quite get that they are hopeless at oversight hearings. I'm all for demonstrating malfeasance. But the GOP House has given a display of its inability to successfully demonstrate anything. Its hearings' impact on public perception has been either zero or negative.

Gun-control advocates blame deaths on gun-control opponents, who argue, in turn, that none of the proposed restrictions would have had any effect on the incident in question. The debate goes nowhere. The media move on. Until the next incident. The cycle begins again.
