Last week we had one of the most volatile weeks in the stock markets that we had seen recently. Globally most stock markets saw a significant and sustained downturn in stocks.

The Dow Jones ended flat Tuesday. Gold was up slightly and oil was also marginally higher. Overall, a rather uneventful day except for one market , bonds. The 10-year bond yield fell by nearly 10 basis points. It now hovers around 2.2 percent. Just a few weeks ago it was near 2.6 percent.

While it may not be quite certain yet, I sense a shift in the sentiment of the stock markets in the United States. The markets fell by 273 points Tuesday. This follows several down days. It just feels like the market is out of steam.

I am in Poland this week trying to assess the real situation across Europe. I will start out by saying it does not look pretty. The gloomy pall of despair is now palpable in the demeanor of the people of Europe.

September has not been a kind month to the U.S. dollar. The month of September proved particularly painful for the U.S. dollar in 2012 and 2013, when it lost ground against all of the G10 currencies except the Japanese yen.
