Meg Whitman Puts $15M into Calif. Gov. Campaign

Monday, 13 Jul 2009 07:41 PM

Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman is putting $15 million of her own money into her campaign to become California’s next governor — a 3-to-1 match on outside contributions, according to Bloomberg news.

That’s in addition to the $6.7 million she had raised from private citizens as of June 30. Combined with a previous personal contribution of $4 million, this brings Whitman’s total campaign funds to more than $25 million, Bloomberg reported.

In January, the 52-year-old Republican, who was an adviser to Republican presidential candidate John McCain, resigned from eBay’s board and those of Procter & Gamble Co. and DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. She faces California insurance commissioner Steve Poizner, who founded SnapTrack Inc., in the Republican primary.

“Meg wanted to show her donors that she is as equally committed to fixing California and winning this election as they are,” senior campaign adviser Henry Gomez said. “She is deeply grateful for all the support she is receiving.”

Among Democrats, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and former governor and current state Attorney General Jerry Brown are leading primary candidates. Newsom has raised $1.6 million, while Brown has raised $7 million, state campaign finance records show.

Another eBay executive, Steve Westly, spent $26 million of his own money in an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in 2006. During Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first campaign in 2003, he spent $10 million of his own money.
