The wife of Sen. Edward “Ted” Kennedy, D-Mass., is being mentioned as a possible successor if he is unable to serve out his term in the Senate, Fox News reports.

The speculation that Vicki Kennedy could succeed her husband has come to the fore as the limelight around Caroline Kennedy has faded. Caroline Kennedy had been prominently mentioned as a candidate to fill the Senate seat vacated when Hillary Clinton became President Obama’s secretary of state.

That Vicki Kennedy might step forward to continue the Kennedy legacy of public service has naturally attracted a lot of speculation. And it may be more than idle chatter.

Citing “sources close to Ted Kennedy,” Fox correspondent Whitney Blake reports the ailing senator, diagnosed with brain cancer in May following a seizure, would prefer that his wife serve out his term. Massachusetts law requires that such vacancies be filled by special election, so Vicki Kennedy would have to campaign for the position.

She is well regarded in Massachusetts, however. Public sympathy, and the media sensation her candidacy would inevitably provoke, could boost her candidacy.

It would not be the first time a senator was succeeded by his spouse. The wives of Sen. Huey Long and Sen. Hubert Humphrey also succeeded their husbands.
