Rep. Tim Scott, R-S.C., says the second anniversary of President Barack Obama’s signing of the $819 billion fiscal stimulus package is no time for celebration, as many of those who got jobs created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act are now back on the unemployment line.

It simply is not working for our country, we are borrowing too much money … we cannot sustain this level of spending.”

Scott said a bill introduced last week by Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis., to rescind what remains of the $819 billion stimulus is a good idea, but has little chance with a Democratic Senate and Obama in the White House.

On introducing his legislation – backed by a group of congressional conservatives who have started the “Defund the Stimulus” campaign – Duffy noted $168 billion of the stimulus money remains unspent, while $7 billion is un-obligated.

“It is very unlikely that we will see [the legislation] come to pass, but the idea is a sound one,” Scott said. “The question really is: Should the government spend more money, or should we let the private sector lead us back to the land of prosperity.

“The answer simply is, the less money the government spends, the more money the private sector can spend.”
