Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin would be making a big mistake leaving the Republican Party to create a third political party.
“That would be a big mistake, because we need to rebuild the Republican Party, not abandon it,” Huckabee told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren.
“I hope she remains — let me be real clear — a part of the Republican Party,” Huckabee said. “I’m a little concerned when I hear her say that she may sort of branch out and go third party or go independent.”
Huckabee also praised Palin for a bold op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post this week on Obama’s cap-and-trade climate plans.
Huckabee said the piece showed that Palin is “not interested in exiting the stage and leaving the spotlight.”
“She just wants to do it as a private citizen, perhaps as a candidate, but not as a sitting governor of Alaska,” he said.
Huckabee called Palin’s decision to resign her governorship “an act of liberation” and speculated that Palin is looking forward to being able to “make an extraordinary amount of money” without having to disclose how she made it, according to Politico.
“She’s going to enjoy that part of it, probably both the making of it and not having to tell how much it was,” he said.
