Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Penn., says he is “thinking about” running for president.

That’s what he told the Catholic Leadership Conference Friday, according to LifeSitenews.com.

“Six months ago I would not have spent 10 seconds on your question, but it's not six months ago,” Santorum said when asked about the presidency.

“I see that, I hate to be calculating, but I see that 2012 is not just throwing somebody out to be eaten, but it's a real opportunity for success."

Santorum says the issue of children has tempted to make a presidential bid. He has seven kids of his own, and 16-month-old Bella was born with Trisomy 18, a genetic disorder which is generally fatal before birth.

Speaking of children like Bella, he said, "They teach you things you can't even imagine."

That launched him to address the issue of abortion.

"I think of we treat these people in society and how we destroy them: 86 percent of Down syndrome children are aborted -- killed. And Down syndrome is five times better than what Bella has."

But children may keep him out of the race, given what his own kids would face if he enters, Santorum says.

"That weighs on me," he said. "When you stand up for the things I do and say the things I say, they brutalize you and they won't stop at you."

Those are the things that "as a father I've got to think about," he says.

"On the other side," though, "as a father, I've got to think about whether they are going to have a country to live in … Are they going to be able to practice their faith in a way that's consistent with what the Church teaches?"

If Santorum does decide to enter the presidential fray, he is likely to find a crowded field. Both former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney are making all the noises of candidates for 2012.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush also is acting like a candidate, and former New York Gov. Rudy Giuliani may decide to run again as well.
