Pop Stars Align for Democratic Convention's Coda

Thursday, 28 Aug 2008 03:00 PM

A galaxy of stars, from an Oscar winner to an Olympic gold medalist and music icons, will take the stage Thursday to provide a rocking finale to the Democratic National Convention.

The convention, which has convened inside a basketball arena since Monday, will switch on its final day to a venue fit for a rock show — a 76,000-seat American football stadium, Invesco Field.

From this site, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama will cap the evening with his acceptance speech before tens of thousands of adoring supporters.

Before his speech, the crowd will be treated to appearances by several celebrities, starting with Olympic gold medal winning gymnast Shawn Johnson, who will lead them through the pledge of allegiance.

Jennifer Hudson, a former "American Idol" contestant who won an Oscar for her role in the musical "Dreamgirls," will then sing the national anthem.

After a slew of political speeches, the music will resume with hip-hop star will.i.am, who wrote a song based on Obama's "Yes we can" speech that became a popular music video, performing with John Legend on the piano.

The pop singer Sheryl Crow will follow their performance before more Democratic politicians deliver speeches to the crowd.

Motown legend Stevie Wonder will then take the stage before yielding to the Democrats' very own political celebrity, former vice president Al Gore, who won an Oscar for his documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" and a Nobel peace prize for his crusade against global warming.

Michael McDonald, the singer of the 1970s rock band The Doobie Brothers, is also scheduled to perform between speeches.

But the biggest star of the evening, Obama, will likely get the loudest acclamation when the 47-year-old senator appears onstage to deliver a nationally televised speech that will end with fireworks.
