Phares: U.S. Needs More Troops in Afghanistan

By Dan Weil   |   Thursday, 29 Oct 2009 04:57 PM

Walid Phares, a senior fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, says the United States needs to send more troops to Afghanistan to defeat the Taliban.

America also needs to continue providing aid to Pakistan, he said.

“The Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan do coordinate. This is one body, one network across the border,” he told Newsmax.TV.

“So in the future strategy that the administration hopefully will quickly put together, we need to be working seriously on two things,” Phares said. “Number one is to provide Gen. [Stanley] McChrystal [head of U.S. forces in Afghanistan] and the NATO command in Afghanistan with all they need strategically to defeat the Taliban and push them into enclaves.”

That means more troops, Phares said. He also said the United States needs to coordinate with the Pakistan government and military to push against the Taliban from their side. And he said the United States must work to support democratically elected governments in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

“In Pakistan, this is the first secular government that’s democratically elected,” Phares said. “This is a government which has pledged not just to fight the Taliban and al-Qaida, but to shut down the factory – that would be the madrasses” [Islamic schools].

“We have one shot here,” Phares said. “Other than this government, you’re going to have either a more Islamist or jihadist influence in Pakistan or a more inactive government, as was the case before.”

The United States should be quiet about providing more aid to Pakistan, so that the government and military aren’t branded as American lackeys, he said.

In addition, the United States needs to coordinate its military strategy, so that when the Pakistani military attacks the Taliban in its country, U.S. forces also do so in Afghanistan, Phares said.
