LOS ANGELES — Court records show Mel Gibson's wife has filed for divorce after 28 years of marriage.
Robyn Gibson filed the petition in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences.
The petition doesn't give any details about the split. Robyn Gibson is seeking jewelry and some other property, and has suggested joint custody for their 9-year-old son.
The couple released the following statement Monday, according to People magazine: "Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so."
Gibson, 53, met Moore, at the time a dental nurse, in the late 1970s after the American-born actor, who moved to Australia when he was 12, had filmed his breakthrough success, Mad Max, according to People. The pair, both now 53, married on June 7, 1980, and have seven children – Hannah, 28, twins Edward and Christian, 26, William, 24, Louis, 21, Milo, 19, and Thomas
The actor-director could be looking at an expensive split, as the couple reportedly made no prenuptial agreement prior to their 1980 marriage, according to Fox News. California's community property laws, in that case, would dictate Robyn would receive half of Mel's estimated $900 million fortune. Her attorney, Laura Wasser, has experience working on pricey celebrity divorces; Wasser represented Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears and Stevie Wonder in their respective splits.
