Tom Davis: Toomey's Run Threatens GOP

Wednesday, 15 Apr 2009 07:53 PM

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the Main Street Advocacy Fund responded to former U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey’s announcement that he was challenging sitting Republican Senator Arlen Specter.

“Today, Pat Toomey launched his campaign to give Democrats a filibuster proof majority in the Senate,” said former U.S. Rep. Tom Davis, R-VA, a spokesperson for the Main Street Advocacy Fund. “Arlen Specter is the only Republican capable of holding this critical Senate seat in an increasingly Democratic state. Toomey’s challenge may serve to settle personal political scores, but it will do so at the expense of the entire Republican Party.

“By deciding to launch a primary challenge to Senator Specter, Pat Toomey seems committed to putting Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid in complete control in Washington,” said Davis.

In his role as the head of the Club for Growth, Toomey has been responsible for the defeat of a number of Republican incumbents, leading to Democratic pick-ups in reliably Republican districts. “Pat Toomey’s efforts over the last few years have resulted in reliably Republican districts and critical Republican Senate seats falling into Democratic hands,” continued Davis.

“This year the stakes are simply too high,” said Davis. “One seat in the U.S. Senate is all that stands between unchecked and unfettered Democratic control in Washington. If Pat Toomey was truly interested in fighting for conservative values he should be working to elect more Republicans in the House and Senate, not working to hand another Senate seat over to the Democrats.”

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, has made it clear how important Specter’s re-election to the Senate is for Republicans, “My job as head of the NRSC is to guide the GOP back to a majority in the Senate. I can’t do that without Arlen Specter. With him as our nominee, I can target our campaign resources toward beating Democrats and growing the Senate Republican Conference.”

“Senator Arlen Specter has been a principled leader in the Senate: a Republican who has been critical to stopping Hillary-care, confirming conservative judges, fighting to keep taxes low, and a member who has shown the ability to win elections even in tough political climates,” concluded Davis.
