President Barack Obama is the “ideal partner” for the global Islamist movement, which has more in common with the radical left than might be imagined, former federal prosecutor Andy McCarthy tells Newsmax.

McCarthy, who prosecuted blind Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman and other jihadists for the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, also warns that America must guard against the rise of shariah — Muslim law — in parts of the country.

McCarthy, whose new book,“The Grand Jihad: How Islam and the Left Sabotaged America,” is being released Tuesday, is co-chairman of the Center for Law and Counterterrorism at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington, D.C., and a contributing editor at National Review.

Supposedly nonviolent Islamists and the global Islamist movement pose a greater danger to democracy and freedom than do terrorists, McCarthy’s book declares.

And McCarthy himself states during an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV that there is “no doubt that Obama is the ideal partner for the global Islamist movement.”

“Islamists now have an administration that’s extraordinarily friendly and wants to be perceived as friendly to not just Islam at large, but to the Islamist movement.

“Obama can speak in a unique way both to the Islamists and to the left. He is a dyed-in-the-wool member of the hard left, but he also has significant biographical ties himself to Islam. In fact he had a religion in his formative years and it was Islam.

“I’m not claiming that he is a Muslim. I’m saying he was raised in the Islamic tradition. His father was a Muslim communist from Kenya, and his stepfather, who he lived with for a number of years in Indonesia, was a practicing Muslim.

“He has great credibility in the Islamic world. He of course has great credibility with the left.

“And even though there are a handful of issues where the hard left and Islamists part company, they are much more together than people realize on big issues. They’re both authoritarian, totalitarian movements. Their biggest obstacle is American constitutional democracy and this whole idea of individual liberty. So they’re quite in harmony on what has to be swept aside before their movements can flourish.

“Where they have differences, those differences would have to be addressed down the road.”

Muslim immigrants populate some areas of Europe where shariah law is enforced rather than national law, McCarthy points out. He worries about that happening in the United States as well.

In Minnesota, there is a school “that actually appears to be a state-funded Islamic school, which is a violation of our constitutional principles of the separation of church and state,” McCarthy tells Newsmax.

And shariah-compliant mortgage arrangements in Minnesota allow the state to intervene in a transaction between a buyer and a seller so that interest doesn’t have to be charged, which would be a violation of shariah.
“It happens in small ways,” McCarthy notes.

“With these encroachments of shariah, people say, well, that doesn’t seem so bad. And then with the growing momentum of it, sooner than we think we have legitimized a corpus of law which actually is completely antithetical in a number of its main particulars to American constitutional democracy.”

The United States should deal with the global Islamist threat on two different tracks, McCarthy says, one for violent terrorists and the other for nonviolent Islamists.

To deal with the violent terrorists, “we have to hunt down terrorists wherever they have safe havens and treat the nations that aid and abet them as if they too were terrorists.

“Our policy toward those nations ought to be regime change.

“As far as the non-forcible threat is concerned, we have to raise our consciousness to what is actually happening in this civilizational campaign that has designs on our way of life.

“We have to realize that we have a problem and we have to do what we can to basically inoculate ourselves from shariah Islam, which means we have to take that into account when we enforce our immigration laws, when we think about who we ought to be bringing into the United States. And we ought to take it into account, to the extent that we can, in our law enforcement.

“In particular I think we want to be very, very careful about legitimizing shariah.”
