WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama and his vice president-elect Joe Biden were set to pay a courtesy call Wednesday to the Supreme Court's nine justices, the court said in a statement.

The private visit will give the president elect, a Harvard University law graduate and former constitutional law professor, a chance to visit the court and meet with its justices.

The court said Obama and Biden were coming "at the invitation of Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. and ... will join the Chief Justice and the Associate Justices in the ceremonial West Conference Room," at the private gathering.

It is just the third time, on the heels of Bill Clinton and Al Gore in 1992 and Ronald Reagan and George Bush senior in 1980 that the leaders of an incoming US administration pay a visit to the court ahead of taking their oath of office, the court said.

Obama may have the chance to name one or two justices to the high court.

Justices serve for life, or until they choose to step down, but John Paul Stevens, picked by Republican Gerald Ford, is 88 and could retire. Ruth Ginsburg, the only current woman justice, named by Bill Clinton, is 75 and also could retire in the next four years.
