Consumer advocate and former Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader says President Barack Obama is “a serious disappointment.”

“He’s a frightened man,” Nader told Yahoo Tech Ticker. “He doesn’t like to take on corporate power, that’s quite clear in the first nine months… he’s a harmony-ideology type, which is not what you want for a strong president.”

One of Nader’s primary complaints is that Obama, unlike most of his recent predecessors, has not taken a strong stand on consumer protection.

“Let’s face it, consumers pay the final bill,” Nader says. “You’d think the president would give some attention to it. He didn’t even establish a special assistant for consumer affairs in the White House.” Nader points out that the Obama administration has not even responded to repeated bi-partisan requests to consider former Public Citizen president Joan Claybrook for this position.

“Somehow he doesn’t want to associate with people who represent the millions of people who elected him in the first place,” Nader says, adding that unless Obama changes his ways, the Democrats will be the minority party in Congress in 2010.

According to Nader, the Nobel committee “certainly cheapened the peace prize” when they awarded it to Obama. “Nine months into his presidency, he’s bombing Afghanistan, there are roughly the same number of soldiers in Iraq, he’ll probably increase the number of soldiers in Afghanistan, and he’s a Bush/Cheney redux in terms of military and foreign speeches — albeit with better speeches toward the Muslim world — and they give him the peace prize,” Nader notes.

“Maybe they just wanted to encourage him to become a peace advocate.”
