GOP's Myrick: Obama Dragging Feet on Iran

Thursday, 08 Oct 2009 03:15 PM

President Obama is risking national security because he is “dragging his feet” in addressing Iran’s nuclear program, Rep. Sue Myrick tells Newsmax.TV.

“It’s very concerning to all of us,” the North Carolina Republican told Newsmax correspondent Kathleen Walter.

“It’s frightening to me," Myrick said. "We’re lessening the protections we have instead of increasing them at a time of great danger in our world. . . Especially when we know there are so many people out there who literally do not like us and want to do harm to us. That’s not an exaggeration.”

Stronger sanctions are needed, she said, expressing disappointment that other countries are taking what she believes is a tougher stance than the United States.

“It seems like we just want to be liked by everybody," she said. "We don’t want to take a tough stand on a lot of things, and if we’re going to be a leader in the world and keep our national security of our citizens the number one issue with us, we’ve got to take stronger stands. We can’t back off.”

“We should be demanding they dismantle their nuclear weapons. This isn’t a game that they’re playing. I mean it’s very frightening, because. . . if they continue along this path other countries in the Middle East are going to want to arm themselves as well for protection against Iran.”

Walter asked Myrick whether Washington is doing anything to prepare the United States for what could become yet another major economic disaster. She cited a Raymond James analysis that found that oil prices may surge to record levels if Iran slashes exports or closes the Strait of Hormuz as a result of a potential conflict over its nuclear program.

“That’s another point, when we bring the economic side into it, it’s so real,” Myrick said. “We just can’t allow this to happen.”

The congresswoman recently joined international lawmakers in signing a historic declaration condemning Iran for human rights abuses. It calls on the government of Iran to put an immediate end to the abuses and the U.N. secretary general to dispatch a team of investigators to Iran to inquire about abuses and report its findings to the international community.
