Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says he does not think Congress should allow the government to shut down March 18 when the current continuing resolution expires, and another short-term measure to keep federal operations going for three more weeks is in order.

In a direct challenge to the administration, however, McConnell also said on “Fox News Sunday” that Republican senators would not vote to raise the debt ceiling unless it is paired with a "credible effort" to address the country's long-term fiscal problems, Politico reports.

mcconnell, debt, vote, limit“I don’t intend to support raising the debt ceiling and I don’t believe any Senate Republicans do unless we do something important related to spending and debt,” McConnell said. “It is going to have to carry something with it that the markets, foreign countries and the American people believe is a credible effort to get a handle on spending and the debt effort.”

Since Democrats control the Senate, 53-47, the debt ceiling could be raised with only Democratic support, McConnell said.

“I’m just predicting Senate Republican votes,” McConnell said. “The Democrats can raise it themselves if they choose to and try do nothing whatsoever about the problem.”
