Citing his "sharply partisan commentary," The New York Times announced Tuesday it is cancelling the column penned by conservative commentator William Kristol.

The Times announced the move Tuesday in a story entitled simply: "William Kristol’s Column in the Times Ends."

"The newspaper’s decision to sign him to a one-year contract as a columnist drew intense criticism," the story reported, "particularly from the political left, as did many of the columns he wrote."

On Monday, Kristol ended his Times column with the statement: "This is William Kristol’s last column."

The parting of the ways had apparently been in the works for several months. Asked in November whether he would continue to write the Times column, Kristol told Portfolio.com that he had mixed feelings due to the amount of work involved.

"It was mutual agreement," the newspaper’s editorial page editor, Andrew Rosenthal, said Tuesday in the newspaper. "We discussed this before the election, and decided that we would end now."

Kristol's opinions will still be readily available, however. The Washington Post has announced that the editor of The Weekly Standard will write a monthly column and contribute to PostPartisan, its opinion blog.
