Huckabee: Bieber’s Pro-Life Stand Is ‘Refreshing’

By Jim Meyers and Kathleen Walter   |   Sunday, 27 Feb 2011 01:47 PM

Former Arkansas Gov. and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has high praise for pop star Justin Bieber and his recent statement against abortion.

The 16-year-old singer was quoted in the March issue of Rolling Stone as saying “I really don’t believe in abortion,” adding: “It’s like killing a baby?” The remarks drew sharp criticism from the liberal media.

But Huckabee tells Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview: “I’m really grateful that he was willing to take a stand, and I’m sorry that he’s getting beaten up.

“He’s an entertainer and he’s a young guy so he’s not expected to be an expert on the issue. But how refreshing it is that a young person who could have easily just taken a walk on that issue had the courage to stand by his convictions.

“I find it interesting that the left always preaches choice, and as long as you agree with what they would choose, which is abortion, they celebrate choice. But if someone, in this case Justin Bieber, actually chooses life, suddenly he’s a persona non grata and the object of ridicule and attack.

“I just find it so hypocritical and utterly disingenuous on the part of the left and the pro-abortion side.

“They don’t understand they are losing this battle, and the reason, research has shown, is that for the first time since 1973 more people now identify as pro-life than not. And the reason those numbers have changed is because of younger people.”

Asked if it is wise for Republicans to revive the abortion debate now when Americans want action on jobs, the economy, and federal spending, Huckabee responds: “Republicans can certainly walk and chew gum at the same time. I think it’s ridiculous to say we can only touch the economy, we can’t talk about anything else. We have to.”
