Reports have emerged that the Justice Department will charge John Edwards with misusing funds from his 2008 Democratic presidential campaign to cover up an affair with an aid. The former North Carolina senator is in a dicey position over how to proceed, Politico reports.

Edwards, a former star lawyer himself, and his attorneys are debating whether he should take the risk of a criminal trial and shell out all the cash necessary to defend himself, sources close to him tell the news service. The alternative could be a plea bargain that could cost him his law license and send him to jail, but possibly restore his public standing -- at least part way.

Sources tell Politico that Edwards’ lawyers are split over which way to go. They say Edwards himself is strongly tempted to fight in court.
