Cantor: Jobs Report Reflects Fear of Obama Policies

Friday, 03 Sep 2010 10:36 AM

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor issued a sharp response to the August jobs report issued today, saying that the policies of President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats are instilling fear that cripples the economy.

The Virginia Republican also called on the Obama administration not to “raise taxes” by allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire at the end of the year.

The report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed the nation’s unemployment rate rose a tenth of a percent in August, climbing to 9.6 percent. The economy lost 54,000 jobs last month, although private sector employment was up slightly, adding 67,000 jobs.

Cantor said in a statement:

"Today’s national jobs report is a clear demonstration that the American economy still has a long way to go. We must empower those in the private sector to begin hiring again, and that starts with ending the cloud of uncertainty hanging over business people, job creators, and working families.

“The policies being pursued by the White House and Democrat leaders in Congress continue to create uncertainty and fear that is inhibiting productivity, innovation and job creation. Job creators, small business owners, and investors don’t know which burdensome tax hike, regulation or mandate will come next, and therefore are reluctant to hire new employees, assume risk and make investments — all crucial components of any economic recovery.

“Further, Democrats still insist on implementing one of the largest tax hikes in American history – despite growing bipartisan opposition. That’s exactly the wrong prescription for what’s ailing this country.

“On January 1, one of two things will happen. Taxes will either go up or they will stay the same for all Americans, many of whom run businesses and hire their own employees. The very last thing these Americans need is thousands of dollars in new taxes, which will increase the chances of a double dip recession. President Obama and his Administration should send an unequivocal signal to business people, families, and job creators by pledging not to raise taxes in this economic climate.

“As we celebrate Labor Day Weekend, it’s important to put today’s unemployment report in perspective. It’s easy to look at these figures and think of them as mere statistics, but it’s important to remember that there are millions of Americans, in Virginia and across the country, who are looking for work and are struggling to support their families, businesses, and meet their obligations. We owe it to them to get our fiscal house in order and to get America working again.”
