Jesse Jackson Criticizes ACORN's Defunding

Friday, 25 Sep 2009 03:30 PM

Activist Jesse Jackson Sr. criticized Congress’s yanking of ACORN funding during an interview with Newsmax.TV’s Kathleen Walter.

During an interview at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City this week, Walter asked the Rev. Jackson whether he agreed with the cuts.

“No,” Jackson responded. “There should be an evaluation, and we should make a distinction between what’s gone wrong with what, in fact, has gone right. ACORN has helped a lot of poor people. If there are some people who have made errors, then eliminate them, as ACORN is trying to do.”

“Look within the church. Sometimes, priests have gone astray. Don’t crush the church,” Jackson said.

Walter asked Jackson how he could defend ACORN against the federal cuts considering the community service organization has remained under a cloud of criminal suspicion. ACORN faces investigations into its dealings in 14 states.

“I’m not trying to defend it," he said. "I’m simply saying there should be due process. We don’t start with a conclusion. We start with an investigation and an analysis.”

Jackson acknowledged that race could be one of several reasons why President Obama has received strong opposition to his healthcare reform crusade.

“It may be a factor, but confusion is a factor. Misunderstanding is a factor, and fear is a factor. So, we must get beyond that — because healthcare costs are rising, because the insurance companies, the pharmaceuticals and hospitals have runaway costs without checks and balances.”

“That’s why the public option is important,” he said.

Walter asked Jackson why he believes it is the government’s responsibility to provide healthcare to its citizens and not the private sector’s.

“Because the private sector’s interests are conceivably narrow,” Jackson said. “Government has reforms for all of its people. The government all, for, and by the people must protect its people . . . Government is, in fact, a stabilizing force and a provider of last resort."
