David Horowitz: Universities Overrun by Radical Professors

By Jim Meyers   |   Friday, 20 Mar 2009 11:32 AM

Best-selling author and conservative activist David Horowitz tells Newsmax of a “huge scandal” in American academics — a taxpayer-supported college is training students to overthrow the U.S. government.

Horowitz — founder of Students for Academic Freedom, a coalition fighting political bias in U.S. universities — also said that unrepentant terrorist and Barack Obama supporter Bill Ayres, a former colleague of Horowitz, is “an idiot.” [Editor's Note: See the full Horowitz interview - Go Here Now.]

Horowitz’s latest book is “One Party Classroom: How Radical Professors at America’s Top Colleges Indoctrinate Students and Undermine Our Democracy,” which he co-authored with Jacob Laksin.

Newsmax TV’s Ashley Martella asked why Duke University was the first of the 12 schools Horowitz focused on in his book.

“I think it’s a particularly egregious example. Everybody knows the case against the lacrosse players. Three Duke lacrosse players were falsely accused, without any evidence, by a criminal of raping her. A rape that never took place.

“They were expelled from the school by the president of the university, again without evidence. Eighty-eight Duke professors took out a full page ad in the Duke paper calling them racists, guilty, comparing them to slave owners, and saying that Duke itself was racist…

“This is an example of the totalitarian mentality in action. This was a public lynching of three students whose crime was that they were white, they were middle-class and they were jocks.”

Horowitz added that one professor who exhibited “deplorable behavior” during the Duke lacrosse case “actually sent an e-mail to the mother of one of the lacrosse players, after he was exonerated, saying to her that she was the mother of a farm animal. He is now a $300,000-a-year professor at Vanderbilt University. The whole system is corrupt.”

Martella noted that Bill Ayers is said to be a “respected professor” at the University of Illinois-Chicago, and asked Horowitz — who was a leftist during the 1960s — “what does that tell you?”

“His actual title is distinguished professor of early childhood education,” said Horowitz. “When I was a leftist I knew Billy Ayres and I thought he was an idiot. He was one of the most shallow, ignorant people I have met on the left, and that’s saying something…

“He is also the editor of a series of teachers’ guides put out by Columbia Teachers College, the premier teachers’ education school in the country, about teaching social justice in the classroom. I read several books in the series and other books like it…

“How do you teach high school students social justice in mathematics? When you have a numbers problem, you use Iraq body counts. When you want to teach them percentages, you teach them that 2 percent of the population owns 90 percent of the wealth, and you go on from there…

“You have Spanish language professors and chemistry professors ranting against America in their classes, and there’s no authority that can hold them in check because professors are a law unto themselves.”

Martella asked Horowitz about a California University-Santa Cruz course on how to organize a revolution.

That revolution is “anti-capitalist” and the teacher is a communist who “is training his students to overthrow the United States government, in a taxpayer supported institution,” Horowitz declared.

“This is a huge scandal and also is a tremendous threat to the future of this country, and my biggest concern is that the Republican Party, and more importantly the conservative movement, has not made this a front and center issue.”
