Streisand Comes Out for Holder

By Jim Meyers   |   Monday, 26 Jan 2009 01:42 PM

Barbra Streisand has sent out an e-mail urging support for President Barack Obama’s controversial choice for attorney general, Eric Holder.

Streisand calls Holder “my friend” and writes: “Eric Holder is a man of unique integrity, as committed to liberty, the rule of law and our constitutional rights as anyone I know. He has enormous experience pursuing justice … He has worked with people on both sides of the political aisle.

“That's why I'm so angry that Republicans in the Senate have chosen to make him a target.”

Holder has taken heat for a number of actions, including his role in President Bill Clinton’s pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich.

Rich renounced his U.S. citizenship and moved to Switzerland to avoid prosecution for racketeering, wire fraud, 51 counts of tax fraud, tax evasion, and illegal trades with Iran in violation of the U.S. embargo following the 1979-80 hostage crisis.

Holder has also been criticized for advocating Clinton’s granting of clemency to 16 Puerto Rican nationalists responsible for bombings that killed six people and injured dozens, and for his role in the government raid in April 2000 that led to the return of a Cuban boy, Elian Gonzales, to his homeland.

On Jan. 21, Holder's bid to become the nation's first African-American attorney general was delayed a week as Senate Republicans demanded more time to question the nominee on a variety of topics.

Streisand asks supporters to make a donation to the left-wing People For the American Way to help them “rebuke the partisan attacks on Eric Holder and ensure his speedy confirmation.”

She also urges supporters to sign a “Confirm Holder” petition.

Streisand writes: “I am fearful that this Republican opposition is really about pushing back on the Obama administration and testing the waters for future judicial confirmation fights…

“People For the American Way is generating grassroots pressure on senators from their home state constituents, leading efforts to get our message out in the media (and doing a fabulous job) and even mobilizing activists in Washington to physically show up for the hearings and the vote on the nomination.”
