Betsy McCaughey: Obamacare Flatlining Fast

Tuesday, 17 May 2011 05:09 AM

By Hiram Reisner

Constitutional scholar and patient advocate Betsy McCaughey says the growing number of Obamacare waivers being awarded is more than enough reason for the GOP to demand repeal of the signature healthcare law in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. Repeal would translate into $750 billion in concrete savings during the first decade, McCaughey also said Monday on Fox News.
“This is one more one reason why this week in Washington, those considering raising the debt ceiling should demand this as the quid pro quo, repealing this law,” said McCaughey, a former New York lieutenant governor. “The longer this law is in effect, the more of its provision go into effect, the more the federal government has its rules, its regulations, its money in every state. So, it becomes more difficult.

“But the administration`s own website says they’re handing these out on a case-by-case basis,” she told Fox News’ Neal Cavuto. “And that means the government has the power to grant a waiver — the government [also] has the power to deny a waiver and destroy a business.”

News reports indicate the White House has provided nearly 1,400 waivers to President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare law. McCaughey said in a time when the nation is facing a fiscal crisis, repealing the law could save the federal government $750 billion in the first decade.

“If the federal government froze federal wages, right, until 2015 — reduced the federal work force by 10 percent through attrition, and required all federal employees to pay half of their pension costs, it would still only save $375 billion over the next decade,” she said. “Repeal of this law saves twice that — the best way to repeal entitlements is before they go into effect.”
