Florida Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings issued a statement Monday apologizing for saying that "gun toting" Sarah Palin "don't care too much" about Jews and blacks, but still maintains that the policies and priorities of a McCain-Palin administration would be "anathema to most African-Americans and Jews."
“I regret the comments I made last Tuesday that were not smart and certainly not relevant to hunters or sportsmen," Hastings said in his statement released to the media.
“I regret that I was not clearer and apologize to Governor Palin, my host where I was speaking, and those who my comments may have offended. I had a lot of other things to say that were important but which were not reported. The point I made, and will continue to make, is that the policies and priorities of a McCain-Palin administration would be anathema to most African Americans and Jews.”
The apology came after an uproar over the comments on blogs and in newspapers over the last few days.
“If Sarah Palin isn’t enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention," Hastings said at a panel discussion sponsored by the National Jewish Democratic Council. "Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through."
Writing on Newsmax.com, pundit and Democrat Susan Estrich wrote: “I'm thinking it through. What I'm thinking is that Hastings is an idiot. Or worse. Is he really equating Jews with moose? Is he suggesting that Sarah Palin is going to shoot us because she shoots them? Is he trying to help Obama with Jews or hurt him?”
