Wheeler: Ground Zero Mosque a 'Trojan Horse'

By Dan Weil   |   Sunday, 08 Aug 2010 09:30 AM

The proposed mosque at ground zero in Manhattan is a Trojan horse by radical Islamists who “want to commemorate the 9/11 attacks,” says Scott Wheeler, executive director of the National Republican Trust.

NRT is spearheading opposition to the mosque near where the World Trade Center once stood in New York City, and Wheeler is warning that President Barack Obama’s policies make America more vulnerable to terrorism.

“They [the Obama administration] have made us vulnerable by apologizing around the world for things that the U.S. shouldn’t have to apologize for,” Wheeler told Newsmax.TV. “They’ve weakened the military. They’ve announced we’re willing to negotiate with tyrants such as President [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad in Iran.”

Story continues below video.

That stance has weakened the United States and strengthened Islamic terrorists, said Wheeler, author of the book “What Obama Doesn’t Want You to Know About His Czars.”

“We’ve now become a state sponsor of terrorism by sending $400 million in aid to the Hamas- run Gaza Strip,” he said. “This sends our enemies a clear message that we can be intimidated and that we are sympathetic with them, no matter how many Jews they kill in Israel.”

Wheeler also has strong criticism of the mosque proposed for ground zero. A New York City commission has cleared the way for construction of the facility, but opponents are vowing a legal challenge.

“Radical Islamists want to commemorate the 9/11 attacks, they want to impose Sharia law on us,” he said. “That was their objective to erect this shrine.”

It’s typical of Islam to have a front group of people saying they want peace and an interfaith dialogue, Wheeler said.

“If the people behind the mosque want to show peace and good will, they can start by vigorously denouncing terrorism, and they haven’t done that.”

The mosque represents a “Trojan horse,” he said. “This was done as an intentional act of provocation against the U.S.”

It’s unclear where the money will come from to construct the $100 million facility, because the builders aren’t disclosing that information, Wheeler said, adding that it appears they’re abroad raising money for it now.

“If there are radical Islamists that would like to see a shrine to their 19 Sept. 11 martyrs built this close to the World Trade Center, we should be very circumspect about allowing this project to go forward,” Wheeler said.

“This could radicalize more Islamists around the world for future attacks against the U.S.”

If it turns out that foreign governments are funding the project, Obama should stop that investment on national security grounds, as he is entitled to do, Wheeler said.

Muslim radicals take advantage of our society’s openness, he said. “They know we have to tolerate people who disagree with us and certain behavior. They also know we have a soft underbelly in our mainstream media, which will always take up the cause of any anti-American group.”

So the extremists terrorize us without breaking the law, intimidating people on airplanes and videotaping military bases, Wheeler said.

“They probe the depths of our security and see what we’re willing to tolerate. They go to the limit without breaking the law.”

And the radical Islamists have something in common with extreme liberals and 80 percent of the American media, Wheeler said.

“They share a common enemy – the United States of America.”
