Jackie Gingrich Cushman: 'Dream Big'

By Dave Eberhart   |   Thursday, 17 Dec 2009 06:52 PM

Jackie Gingrich Cushman, Newsmax’s newest blogger and the daughter of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, chatted with Newsmax.TV’s Ashley Martello about the new book she wrote with her father and how she was hopeful that the GOP will field candidates that are keenly attuned to voters who want less government and fewer tax burdens.

The book titled “Five Principles for a Successful Life” features -- as advertised -- five axioms that she and her father have made the backbone of their unique life-guiding book: “Dream big, work hard, learn every day, enjoy life, and be true to yourself.”

These ostensibly simple rules for the road of life were gleaned and fleshed out by Jackie and her father by culling the success secrets of such prominent people as Bill Clinton, Rush Limbaugh, Mary Matalin, and David Petraeus.

At the heart of the book’s message: you can live life to its fullest with discipline and perseverance.

  • Dream big like Walt Disney, who shared the magic kingdom of his imagination with millions, or like Jackie’s sister, Kathy, who overcame a potentially crippling case of rheumatoid arthritis to triumph in a walking marathon. The bottom line, according to Jackie, founder and president of the Learning Makes a Difference Foundation: “See where your dreams can take you.”
  • As to working hard, Jackie highlights the rigors of her father’s early political career, emphasizing that working hard can be a fountainhead of energy. Bottom line, according to Jackie, “adopting an attitude of cheerful persistence will help you reach your goal.” She noted that her father had a couple of defeats in his early political career but learned from his mistakes to go on an triumph.
  • Learning every day is described as a reciprocal process. “You can’t be passive; you must be engaged.”
  • Enjoying life has at it roots being grateful for all your blessings and doing something every day to show compassion and generosity to others.
  • Being true to yourself, Jackie confides to Ashley, is the hardest principle to live by. In the seminal Gingrich study, the reader discovers what people from William Shakespeare to Henrik Ibsen to John P. Abizaid have had to reveal about this must component for an honest life.

“Big dreams are contagious,” reveals Jackie. “They often contain blueprints for how to improve the world and continue on after you are gone.”

In her latest Newsmax blog, she laments the increased government intervention under President Barack Obama and how citizens are being carefully “inoculated against reality.”

She wants folks to rally themselves and not simply wait around for Big Brother government to fix things.

“People tell me they want less government in their life,” she tells Ashley. She also fervently hopes that the GOP will muster candidates that truly reflect the strong will of the people.

Whether she gets her wish or not, her and her father’s new tome contains inspiring and memorable words of wisdom -- a book to treasure for a lifetime.
