Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama are neck and neck in a tight battle for Florida, according to a new poll.
The latest Mason-Dixon poll shows Obama with a statistically insignificant lead of 49 percent to 47 percent over McCain, with 7 percent of the state's voters still undecided. The poll's margin of error is 4 points.
“The state remains a tossup, which is bad news for McCain as he must win Florida to have any chance of winning the presidency,” said Mason-Dixon managing director Brad Coker. “His best hope could be the racial composition of Florida’s ’undecided’ voters, of whom, 84 percent are white.”
The poll of 625 likely voters also shows:
Obama leading among independents, 48 percent to 39 percent. McCain and Obama tied at 46 percent each in the Tampa Bay area. McCain leading 53 percent to 38 percent in North Florida. McCain leading 53 percent to 40 percent in Central Florida. McCain leading 56 percent to 38 percent in Southwest Florida. Obama leading 61 percent to 30 percent in Southeast Florida. McCain leading 50 percent to 41 percent among white voters. Obama leading 94 percent to 4 percent among black voters. McCain leading 48 percent to 45 percent among Cuban and Hispanic voters.
