Senate Democrat and Majority Whip Dick Durbin admits that as many as 15 Senate seats are in play — with poll numbers showing the races are "within 5 points."

Durbin offered the dire assessment in a fundraising email he signed sent out on behalf of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Durbin is asking Democrats to donate – even $5 – to combat Karl Rove. He says Rove is leading "shady groups" that have raised $34 million to help elect Republicans.

The Illinois Senator also singled out Republican colleague Jim DeMint, saying if the Democrats lose the Senate, DeMint is threatening to put Washington into "complete gridlock."

Durbin's full email follows:

Dear friend,

As Majority Whip, my job is to count votes when it comes down to the wire.

dick, durbin, midterms, democrats, seats, sent,in,play, campaign, letterAnd this fall, we're not just facing a single tight contest; there are 15 races within 5 points. You wouldn't know it from their economic policies, but Republicans can count, too - and they know they only need 10 of those seats to capture the majority.

That's why Karl Rove's shady groups have already raised $34 million to tip these races to the GOP. And that's why, with voters in some states already beginning to cast their ballots, the DSCC urgently needs the resources to respond.

Take it from me: Every vote counts. Every seat counts. Your immediate support of the DSCC by September 30 could mean the difference between winning or losing any of these 15 races-and could determine whether we keep our majority.

Click here to give $5 or more to the DSCC. The final quarterly deadline for this year's elections is September 30, and the DSCC needs to raise $665,342 in order to keep pace with the GOP. Give today, and your contribution will be matched, doubling the power of your support!

When I'm counting votes in the Senate, I'm working to get to 60 - enough to overcome Republican obstruction. But if the GOP takes the majority, the only number they'll care about is zero: as in zero progress on important issues and zero chance to pass President Obama's agenda.

Don't just take it from me - take it from GOP Sen. Jim DeMint, one of the architects of this year's conservative uprising. He promises that if Republicans take the majority, we'll have "complete gridlock."

Click here to fight back! The DSCC must raise $665,342 by Sept. 30, and your gift of $5 or more now will be matched and could counter attack ads on Barbara Boxer and Patty Murray, or get Democrats to the polls. The margin in many races will be razor-thin. Every dollar you give will make a difference!

Every vote counts, and every seat counts. Now it's your time to stand up and be counted.
