Morris: Kennedy Senate Campaign a 'Disgrace'

Thursday, 18 Dec 2008 06:40 PM

By Jim Meyers

Political commentator and Newsmax contributor Dick Morris says the appointment of Caroline Kennedy to fill Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat would smack of “dynastic politics” and be a “disgrace.”

In an exclusive Newsmax interview, Morris also declared that the scandal unfolding around Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Kennedy’s possible appointment “are not unrelated.”

Newsmax’s Ashley Martella asked Morris about Kennedy and he responded:

“She has no qualifications for the job and New Yorkers won’t even get to vote for her because David Paterson, the governor, is just going to make the appointment.”

If appointed, Kennedy would have to face an election in 2010 to complete the last two years of Hillary’s term. But Morris observed: “Once she gets the Senate seat, as an incumbent she probably would be re-elected for the rest of her life because it would be hard for anyone to defeat her in a primary and New York is a heavily Democratic state.

“The real question is, will Governor Paterson appoint her. Let’s just understand the dynamics of what we’re dealing with here. The governor, David Paterson, owes his whole political career to the fact that his father was the highest black official in New York State, the secretary of state, and in fact he took his father’s seat in the state Senate and that led to his appointment as lieutenant governor.”

Paterson is going to fill a seat vacated by Hillary Clinton “who only got the Senate seat because her husband was president,” Morris said. “He has two choices for the seat: Caroline Kennedy, who is only running because her father was president, and Andrew Cuomo, the attorney general who’s in line for it only because his father was governor.”

Asked if he’s surprised that some liberal Democrats have been critical of Kennedy, Morris said: “There has to be a feeling by people in New York State that you should in some way earn a Senate seat.

“This woman has done absolutely nothing. Every book she has published has been simply derivative of her mother. The poems my mother liked best. The stories my mother liked best. ‘Profiles in Courage [For Our Time],’ which she wrote, which obviously was a sequel to her father’s book.

“I mean, this is as close as we can actually get to dynastic politics. And I think it’s a disgrace.”

When Martella switched to “another topic” and asked about Gov. Blagojevich’s problems in Illinois, Morris declared: “Those topics are not unrelated, because the only real reason that anybody would seriously consider appointing Caroline Kennedy to the Senate is that Kennedy money will help him get elected governor in his own right.

“So Blagojevich said, please give me the money. The Kennedys would never be so crass, but why else do you think David Paterson would ever appoint Caroline Kennedy to the Senate?”

Martella asked if Morris expects that a link will emerge between the Blagojevich scandal and Rep. Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s choice as his chief of staff.

“It’s hard to say exactly who, but Blagojevich is not specifically only under investigation for the sale of the Senate seat,” Morris said. “He is also under investigation for two years for the sale of lesser state offices, and I think that’s going to involve a lot of people in Illinois politics.”

Morris mentioned Chicago slum lord and felon Tony Rezko, “the financier who’s very close to Blagojevich and Obama,” and added: “We’ll see where that leads but it’s certainly something that bears watching for the next year or two.”
