Liberals are looking to the tea party as a blueprint for their own grass-roots organization within the Democratic Party.
Former Obama administration environmental adviser Van Jones is behind the proposed group, which he is calling The American Dream Movement,” Washington Post blog The Fix
The movement wants to unite progressives across the country in the same way that the tea party and its affiliates have with conservatives. Target groups include unemployed veterans and homeowners struggling to make their mortgage.
“We think we can do what the tea party did,” Jones told The Fix. “They stepped forward under a common banner, and everybody took them seriously.
“Polls suggest there are more people out there who have a different view of the economy, but who have not stepped forward yet under a common banner.”
The Dream Movement is due to launch in a rally in New York on Thursday.
Jones resigned from the White House after just six months when video emerged of him referring to Republicans by a crude term. It was also discovered that he had signed a petition questioning whether the George W. Bush administration had deliberately allowed 9/11 to happen as a pretext to war.
