Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels believes U.S. Rep Paul Ryan, R-Wis., would “enrich” the 2012 presidential field, adding that that he did not encourage Ryan to run, Politico.com reported.

“I’ve not spoken to him lately, and I’ve not encouraged him,” Daniels said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He described Ryan as a candidate who could help the middle class with his “affirmative pro-growth, pro-jobs message.”

The House Budget Committee chairman “would be a very effective and clear spokesman with a heart for people that I think our party must display,” Daniels said.

Politico.com said Daniels “wouldn’t attempt to intrude on” any decision by Ryan on whether to jump into the 2012 race.

“It is not for me to say,” Daniels said. “He’s got a young family, and he’s fairly young in his career.”
