Christie: Obama Could Learn a Few Things from Me

Monday, 27 Jun 2011 03:08 PM

New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie says President Obama could learn a few things from from his example in dealing with Democrats over mushrooming budgets.

Specifically, Christie points to his recent sit-downs with state Democrats to craft a workable bipartisan deficit-reduction bill that is expected to become law Tuesday, according to the National Journal.

Christie admonished Obama’s failure to “get his hands dirty” in the ongoing budget talks, and said, “The president is the person in charge. He's the one to force consensus and make concessions the Republicans will believe they can count on.

“When I say I'll get Republican votes to do this, they look at me and go, ‘OK, we'll do it,’” Christie continued. “Otherwise, it's squishy and everyone takes a risk.”

But Christie qualified his remarks about Obama by noting, “I think the president is a leader. What he’s failing on is this debt and deficit crisis. He’s failing. But it doesn’t mean he can’t turn it around -- he’s coming in the room, finally.

“Get [Vice President] Joe Biden out and him in,” Christie continued, referring to the president’s entrance Monday into a Biden-led effort to strike a feasible compromise on the debt ceiling between the Democratic Senate and Republican House.

One example of a Democrat doing it right, Christie said, is New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. “He’s a perfect example of this,” Christie said. “He gets in the room, gets his hands dirty, and gets it done. He’s not sitting back waiting to see how everybody comes in on this and if he can find room to wriggle.”
