Liz Cheney Targets Obama's 'Radical' Policies

By David A. Patten   |   Tuesday, 13 Oct 2009 02:09 PM

Elizabeth L. Cheney, eldest daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is launching a new organization to counteract the "radical" policies of the Obama administration, which she says are "making the nation weaker."

KeepAmericaSafe.com expands Cheney's increasingly high-profile role in policy debates. Founding board members of the organization include Weekly Standard editor William Kristol and Debra Burlingame, the sister of an American Airlines pilot who was killed on 9/11.

According to Politico.com pundit Ben Smith, the group's establishment has symbolic significance.

He says it marks the end of an unusual period of bipartisan consensus over national security. During the presidential campaign, Obama and Republican Sen. John McCain "agreed on many security issues from Central Asia to Guantanamo Bay," Smith says.

A brief video posted on KeepAmericaSafe.com suggests that consensus is long gone.

"Barack Obama knows how to give a great speech, but when it comes to America's defense, the rhetoric doesn't match the reality," the video pronounces.

The video suggests Obama has a record of talking tough but backing down on missile defense, the surge in Afghanistan, and the CIA interrogation probe.

Cheney told Politico the group's issues will include: appropriate troop levels, the missile shield, the handling of detainees in the war on terror, and the Justice Department's probe into CIA interrogation methods.

According to Smith, several former advisers to McCain's presidential campaign are playing important roles in the organization.

Cheney has become increasingly outspoken in her criticisms of the president. Sunday she told Fox News that Obama should skip the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo.

"The notion that the White House says he will go to Oslo to accept this prize just adds to the farce," she said.
