Ed Klein: Caroline Kennedy Is 'Stonewalling'

Monday, 18 May 2009 04:31 PM

Caroline Kennedy is “stonewalling” about why she withdrew her name from consideration to fill Hillary Rodham Clinton’s vacant U.S. Senate seat, Edward Klein, author of a new book on Edward M. Kennedy, tells Newsmax.

Matt Lauer asked Caroline Kennedy on NBC’s Today Show about an allegation in Klein’s “Ted Kennedy: The Dream That Never Died” that she dropped out after her three children in effect did an “intervention” to get her to withdraw. They were concerned that the pressure of being in the political arena had turned her into a mean, snappy person, Klein writes in the book, which comes out this week.

Calling Klein’s allegation “absolute nonsense,” Caroline Kennedy told Lauer that she pulled out of the race because it was the right decision, and there are many ways to serve. Asked what she thought of New York Gov. David Paterson’s handling of the selection process to fill the seat, the daughter of John F. Kennedy said she has “moved on.”

“Matt Lauer asked her several times why she pulled out, and she refused to explain why,” Klein says. “She is stonewalling.”

Klein says the source of his account is Caroline’s eldest daughter, Rose Kennedy Schlossberg, who gave him an on-the-record interview about what happened behind the scenes.

“The fact of the matter is she has given no reason,” Klein says. “And it’s not very shameful that she dropped out because her children asked her to. In fact, it shows that she has compassion for her family and puts family first.”

Klein says that Kennedy’s refusal to explain why she dropped out underscores why she is not fit for the job of senator.

“There’s a certain sense of Kennedy entitlement that she doesn’t have to – like everyone else – explain her behavior,” Klein says.
