Republican Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour will join the party’s outside spending groups American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS, the organizations announced Thursday. That’s a major coup for the groups, given Barbour’s fundraising prowess, The Hill reports.

The Crossroads organizations were created by top Republican strategists including Karl Rove and raised more than $71 million to buttress GOP campaigns last year. The groups announced last week that they are doubling their fundraising target for next year’s elections to $240 million from $120 million.

"Both Gov. Barbour and Karl Rove are prodigious fundraisers and brilliant strategists, and we are honored to have them both engaged with us," said Crossroads President Steven Law.

Barbour chaired the Republican National Committee in the 1990s and later headed the Republican Governors Association. He also spent time as a lobbyist.
